Animation/live-action hybrids with animals tend to aim towards the younger set, but the Universal comedy Strays is targeted at an older crowd.

It’s the story of an abandoned dog, voiced by Will Ferrell, who teams up with other abandoned pets including one voiced by Jamie Foxx, to take revenge on a former owner, portrayed by Will Forte.

Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) directs from a script by Dan Perrault (American Vandal).

Phil Lord and Chris Miller (directors, The Lego Movie; producers, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, The Mitchells vs. The Machines) are producing the film, as part of their first-look deal with Universal. The film was originally developed by Erik Feig’s Picturestart.

Other producers include the director Greenbaum, as well as Louis Leterrier and Aditya Sood, the latter of whom is president of film at Lord Miller.

Executive producers are Jessica Switch and Niki Baida (Lord Miller). Julia Hammer co-producers for Picturestart. Overseeing for Universal are Jeyun Munford (senior vp production development) and Tony Ducret (director of development).

The film has already been shot and now headed to animation. No release date has been announced.

The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news.
