SDCC 2026: New Looks At ‘Common Side Effects’ S2 And ‘Regular Show,’ Plus Three Early Renewals

Friday’s animation panels at San Diego Comic-Con delivered new footage from Common Side Effects and Regular Show: The Lost Tapes, a fresh take on My Little Pony, and early renewals for two recently launched series and one that has not even premiered yet.

Here are some highlights from a packed Friday:

Common Side Effects Season Two First Look

Adult Swim released an extended first look at the second season of Common Side Effects, which is scheduled to premiere in early 2027.

Created by Joe Bennett and Steve Hely, the series follows Marshall and Frances, former high school lab partners caught in a widening conspiracy after Marshall discovers a mushroom capable of healing almost anything. Dave King and Emily Pendergast voice the pair, with Joseph Lee Anderson, Mike Judge, and Martha Kelly also in the cast.

The show is executive produced by Bennett and Hely alongside Judge and Greg Daniels. Bandera Entertainment and Green Street Pictures produce the series for Adult Swim.

My Little Pony: Forever Friendship Heads To YouTube

Hasbro announced My Little Pony: Forever Friendship, a new animated series that will premiere exclusively on YouTube in early 2027.

The series returns to characters from the Friendship Is Magic era, following Twilight Sparkle, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, and Fluttershy through stories centered on friendship, belonging, and emotional growth. Nine-minute episodes will be released every two weeks.

Gretchen Mallorie is showrunner and head writer, with Tayhan Mustafa directing. The series was developed with Malaysia-based Lil Critter Workshop and features artistic contributions from illustrator Nicholas Kole.

President Curtis Scores Second Term

Adult Swim renewed President Curtis for a second season two days before the Rick and Morty spinoff’s series official premiere. Production on the new season is already underway.

Keith David reprises his role as President Andre Curtis, who leads his staff through interdimensional disputes, cryptid encounters, paranormal investigations, and other crises that Rick Sanchez cannot be bothered to handle. Stephanie Beatriz and Jim Rash co-star.

The renewal was announced during Friday’s SDCC panel, which featured David, Beatriz, Rash, and co-creators Dan Harmon and James Siciliano. Danielle Uhlarik, Monica Mitchell, and Steve Levy executive produce alongside Harmon and Siciliano.

The series premieres Sunday, July 26, at 11:30 p.m. on Adult Swim, following the Rick and Morty season finale. Episodes will stream the following day on HBO Max.

Regular Show: The Lost Tapes Returns In September

Cartoon Network offered a first look at the next batch of Regular Show: The Lost Tapes, featuring more of Mordecai, Rigby, and the rest of the park crew’s reliably disastrous attempts to get through the workday.

The ten new episodes will begin rolling out in September. Creator J.G. Quintel announced the release window after the show’s SDCC panel, and Cartoon Network shared a preview online (below).

The revival debuted in May, nearly nine years after the original Regular Show concluded. Quintel returned as Mordecai alongside William Salyers as Rigby, Sam Marin as Benson, Pops, and Muscle Man, and Mark Hamill as Skips.

Adventure Time: Side Quests Renewed For Season Two

Another pair of Cartoon Network Studios superstars, Finn and Jake, will be back this fall. Warner Bros. Animation announced a 20-episode second season of Adventure Time: Side Quests less than a month after the show debuted on Disney+ and Hulu.

The series revisits a younger Finn and Jake and draws on the shorter, self-contained adventures of the original show’s early seasons. Sasha Knight voices Finn, while John DiMaggio returns as Jake. The supporting cast includes Tom Kenny as Ice King, Hynden Walch as Princess Bubblegum, Olivia Olson as Marceline, and Niki Yang as BMO.

The first season premiered June 29. No precise release date for season two has been announced.

Backyard Sports Gets An Animated Series

Following January’s animated special, Playground Productions is producing 20 new 11-minute Backyard Sports episodes based on the classic children’s video game franchise. Chris Waters will serve as showrunner, Juston Gordon-Montgomery as supervising director, and Lighthouse Studios will provide animation services.

No distributor or release date has been announced. The original special has attracted more than 1.2 million views on YouTube and was subsequently released on Prime Video in select territories.
