Christian metal band Demon Hunter has sued Netflix, Netflix Studios, and AEG Presents, alleging that the companies’ use of the KPop Demon Hunters name infringes on its established trademark.
According to The Wrap, which says it has seen the full complaint, Hyde Lane, the corporation through which the band operates, filed the lawsuit Tuesday. It alleges trademark infringement, false designation of origin, and unfair competition.
Demon Hunter was formed in 2000 and has spent more than two decades releasing albums, touring, and selling merchandise under its name. The lawsuit argues that Netflix’s enormously successful animated feature, its soundtrack, merchandise, and an upcoming global concert tour promoted with AEG have pushed the KPop Demon Hunters brand into “almost complete overlap” with the goods and services the band offers.
Hyde Lane describes itself as the senior user of the Demon Hunter mark and claims Netflix’s significantly greater reach could cause consumers to see the band as affiliated with, sponsored by, or derived from the animated film.
“Defendants’ greater size and strength overwhelms Hyde Lane’s established identity,” the complaint reportedly states, arguing that the band has effectively lost control of its commercial identity to companies with far greater resources.
The suit seeks an injunction restricting the defendants’ use of the name, along with Netflix’s profits, treble and exemplary damages, attorneys’ fees, and other relief. Hyde Lane has also demanded a jury trial.
Neither Netflix nor AEG had responded to The Wrap’s request for comment at the time of publication.
Released in June 2025, KPop Demon Hunters is Netflix’s biggest property, by far, and has produced a chart-topping soundtrack, extensive merchandise empire, and a growing slate of franchise extensions. The disputed concert tour is expected to visit 150 cities.
