Let’s Get Dangerous: ‘Darkwing Duck’ Gets New Disney+ Series

Disney has greenlit an all-new Darkwing Duck animated series for Disney+, with Mark Hamill voicing the title character.

The series follows Darkwing Duck after 35 years trapped in an alternate world where nobody remembers his superhero exploits. When a rebellious teenager named Duckie arrives with knowledge of his heroic past, she pulls the ego-driven vigilante back into action. Together, they will face returning enemies including Negaduck and Megavolt and reunite with Launchpad, Gosalyn, and Morgana.

Sean Tretta (Star Trek: Picard) and Borja Peña Gorostegui (Lost & Crowned) are executive producing. Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Alex McAtee, and Gabby Grantham are producing through Point Grey Pictures. Original series creator Tad Stones consulted on the project.

“The new creative team has certainly amped up the action and comedy without forgetting the Disney heart,” said Stones in a release.

Hamill will voice Drake Mallard, taking over the role originated by Jim Cummings. Rogen will play Launchpad McQuack, with Lizzy Caplan as Gosalyn and Lilimar as Duckie. The cast also includes Dan Stevens, Tiffany Shepis, Kathryn Newton, Teo Briones, Tyler Dean Flores, Katie Rich, and Nat Faxon.

The announcement has been met with a mixed early response online, with much of the criticism focused on Disney’s decision to replace longtime Darkwing Duck voice actor Jim Cummings. Fans have also expressed reservations about the character’s redesign and the decision not to build on the version introduced in the 2017 DuckTales series.

Produced by Disney Television Animation, the original Emmy-nominated series debuted in 1991 and ran for 91 episodes. It is currently streaming on Disney+.
