‘Brave’ Director Mark Andrews Boards ‘John Carter, Warlord Of Mars’ Animated Series

Oscar-winning filmmaker Mark Andrews has joined the upcoming John Carter, Warlord of Mars animated series as supervising director and co-showrunner. Andrews, who directed Pixar’s Brave, will oversee the adaptation alongside co-showrunner and head writer Michael Kogge.
According to TheWrap, Andrews and Kogge will discuss the project during a San Diego Comic-Con panel on Friday, July 24, at 4 p.m. in Room 32B.
The series is based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ influential Barsoom novels, beginning with A Princess of Mars, which was first serialized in 1912. The books follow John Carter, a Civil War veteran mysteriously transported to Mars, where he becomes entangled in conflicts among the planet’s inhabitants.
Andrews has a long history with the property. In addition to directing Brave, which won the 2013 Academy Award for best animated feature, he co-wrote Disney’s 2012 live-action John Carter with that film’s director, Andrew Stanton, and Michael Chabon. His other Pixar credits include The Incredibles, Ratatouille, and One Man Band.
“Animation is the best way to achieve the visual intensity and scope the story demands, and finally the tools and technology have arrived to deliver them,” Andrews said in a statement, adding, “Animation is the perfect medium to bring Burroughs’ world to life.”
Kogge initially developed the animated adaptation and previously wrote and directed a John Carter of Mars audio series. His credits also include numerous books and other publishing projects for Lucasfilm. Jim Sullos and Wolf Larson will oversee the new series on behalf of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc.
Although this will be the first produced animated adaptation of the books, it is not the first attempt to bring John Carter to the medium. Warner Bros. animator Bob Clampett developed a proposed animated feature based on the property during the 1930s. Test footage was created, but the project never moved forward.
Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. has not yet announced a production studio, distributor, release date, or animation style for the new series, but we’ll keep you posted as we learn more.
