Onimusha Onimusha

Netflix has released the trailer for its upcoming anime series adaptation of Capcom’s Onimusha video game franchise. The show will debut worldwide on the platform on November 2.

In the trailer, we get our first look at Onimusha’s impressive cg character animation in motion, superimposed over rustic, hand-drawn backgrounds. According to Netflix, “This amalgamation of traditional and modern animation techniques promises to bring a fresh, immersive experience to both long-time fans and newcomers alike.”

Here’s what we know about the series:

  • Animation studio Sublimation produces the series, with Shinya Sugai (Dragon’s Dogma) directing. Iconic Japanese action film director Takashi Miike (13 Assassins, Ichi the Killer) oversaw production as the show’s supervising director, and live-action stunt coordinator Keiki Tsujii helped choreograph the fight scenes.
  • Series synopsis: Set in the early Edo Period, a time when Japan was transitioning towards peace and warfare was fading into history, an aging Samurai named Musashi, armed with the mythical “Oni Gauntlet,” embarks on an epic journey to vanquish lurking demons.
  • Capcom released the first Onimusha game on the PlayStation 2 in 2001. The series was unique, although not exclusive, in that it used real actors as models for its main characters. Similarly, the Netflix series will base its main character on legendary Seven Samurai and High and Low actor Toshiro Mifune.
  • Kim Jung Gi and Manilyn Toledana handled character design, and long-time Miike collaborator Koji Endo wrote the series’ score.
  • The Onimusha series’ voice cast features Akio Otsuka, Hochu Otsuka, Daiki Yamashita, Subaru Kimura, Katsuyuki Konishi, Kazuyuki Okitsu, Makoto Furukawa, Aya Yamane, Ryohei Kimura, and Toshihiko Seki.
