Prime Video Picks Up Canceled Sci-Fi Series ‘Pantheon,’ Will Debut Unaired Second Season On October 15
AMC’s canceled adult sci-fi animated series Pantheon has been revived at Prime Video, which will upload the show on October 15.
According to a Linkedin post from Titmouse, the studio that produced the show, Prime Video has secured the rights to the first two seasons of Pantheon, the second of which never aired on AMC. The post also includes a link to a season two trailer, posted from the Prime Video Australia and New Zealand Youtube account.
No news yet as to whether the series could continue beyond its second season, but this is a significant first step if that were to happen.
Pantheon is a speculative science fiction story about a bullied teenager who gets help from a stranger online. Over time, it’s revealed that the internet Samaritan is actually her dead father, David, whose consciousness was uploaded to the cloud after an experimental brain scan. David is the first, but hardly the last, of a new type of entity called Uploaded Intelligence, or UI. The emerging technology creates massive and immediate sociopolitical changes, leading to conspiracies that threaten to trigger a new kind of world war.
The show is based on a collection of short stories from author Ken Liu. It was created, written, showrun, and executive produced by Craig Silverstein (Nikita, Terra Nova), with Titmouse handling animation.
AMC’s cancelation of the show earlier this year surprised many, especially considering an entire second season had already been produced. Facing financial struggles, the decision to drop the show was part of broader programming write-offs of $300-400 million at the network.
