Audiences Will Finally Get To See ‘Star Wars Detours,’ But Only At The Lucas Museum

There’s an almost mythical quality around the long-unreleased animated comedy Star Wars Detours that may be addressed now that the series is finally seeing the light of day, according to one of the series’ developers, Seth Green. That said, the show series isn’t coming to cable or Disney+, or getting a conventional release at all for that matter. Instead, a curated selection of episodes will be shown at the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles.

Green announced the screenings during the museum’s San Diego Comic-Con panel, according to Entertainment Weekly. The museum, which opens September 22, has not yet revealed how many episodes it will exhibit or when they will be available to visitors.

Created by George Lucas and developed with Robot Chicken creators Green and Matthew Senreich, Detours was conceived as a comedic look at the period between the prequel and original trilogies. Green described Lucas’ original pitch as “The Simpsons in the Star Wars universe.”

Lucasfilm unveiled the cg series at Star Wars Celebration in 2012, screening a trailer and several clips. The voice cast included Green, Seth MacFarlane, Felicia Day, Donald Faison, Jennifer Hale, Zachary Levi, Joel McHale, and “Weird Al” Yankovic, along with returning Star Wars performers Anthony Daniels, Ahmed Best, and Billy Dee Williams.

Then Disney acquired Lucasfilm. With a new sequel trilogy in development, the company reportedly decided that a broad parody might not be the best way to introduce Star Wars characters to a new generation. The show was postponed in 2013 and never resurfaced, apart from a leaked episode that briefly appeared online in 2020.

Green has said that 39 episodes were completed and another 62 scripts were ready for production. For now, however, only an unspecified selection from that substantial archive is set to escape the Lucasfilm vault.
