‘X-Men ’97’ Season 2 Gets Trailer, July Disney+ Release Date
Marvel Animation’s popular revival series X-Men ’97 will return to Disney+ on July 1 with a nine-episode second season, the studio announced alongside a new trailer.
The upcoming season picks up after the shocking finale of season one, with the X-Men scattered across different points in time and searching for a way back home. Back in the ‘90s, anti-mutant sentiment continued to grow while new enemies emerged during the team’s absence.
The series proved to be far more than just a millennial nostalgia hit and became one of Disney+’s most-watched original animated titles after debuting earlier this year, and currently holds a 99% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and was nominated for an Emmy. The revival has been widely praised for recapturing the tone and visual style of the original Fox Kids series while expanding its serialized storytelling and character drama for a contemporary audience without skipping a beat.
Season two features returning cast members Ross Marquand as Professor X, Matthew Waterson as Magneto, Ray Chase as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, George Buza as Beast, and Lenore Zann, who delivered a heartbreaking performance in season one, as Rogue.
Former head writer Beau DeMayo, who developed and wrote the acclaimed first season, is not involved in the new episodes following his firing by Marvel ahead of the series’ 2024 premiere. DeMayo publicly claimed Marvel removed his season two credits after he shared Pride-themed fan art online, while Marvel said his dismissal followed an internal investigation that uncovered what the studio described as “egregious” findings. That said, in today’s materials, he is listed as both an executive producer and writer of the show’s second season.
After he was let go, DeMayo continued to support the creative team behind the series. When the trailer for Season 2 screened at New York Comic Con last October, he posted:
Just saw the Season 2 trailer for #xmen97! Major congrats to Brad and the whole team. Also a special congrats to @xmentas for their new role as executive producers. Long overdue!
Send the team good vibes because these next final months to lock are always the craziest! @MarvelStudios
And remember, peeps, the X-men are bigger than any one person and the roster is always meant to change!
Executive producers of the show’s new season include Kevin Feige, Brad Winderbaum, Louis D’Esposito, Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt, Julia Lewald, Eric Lewald, Larry Houston, and DeMayo. Jake Castorena serves as supervising producer, with episodes directed by Emmett Yonemura and Chase Conley. Writers include DeMayo, JB Ballard, Bailey Moore, Antony Sellitti, Brian Ford Sullivan, and Mariah Wilson.
