The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the winners of the 52nd Student Academy Awards, with three animation prizes and a trio of experimental awards among them.

All winning projects are now eligible for consideration in the 98th Academy Awards short film categories. Historically, Student Academy Award winners have gone on to secure 69 Oscar nominations and 15 wins, cementing the program’s reputation as a launchpad for animation and filmmaking talent.

Animation awards went to:

The Shyness of Trees – Sofiia Chuikovska, Loïck du Plessis D’Argentré, and Maud Le Bras (Gobelins, France)


A Sparrow’s Song – Tobias Eckerlin (Film Academy Baden-Württemberg, Germany)


The 12 Inch Pianist – Lucas Ansel (Rhode Island School of Design)

Alternative/Experimental awards went to:

flower_gan – Mati Granica (London College of Communication, U.K.)


The Song of Drifters – Xindi Zhang (University of Southern California)

Without Perfection

This year’s Student Academy Awards competition received 3,127 entries from 988 colleges and universities around the world. The selected winners will be presented with their awards on October 6 at the Ziegfeld Ballroom in New York City, during a ceremony held in conjunction with the New York Film Festival.

Winners will participate in a weekend of industry networking and educational programming before discovering whether they’ll take home gold, silver, or bronze medals in their categories.
