Warner Bros. Discovery has pulled two more Cartoon Network titles from HBO Max. On July 31, 2025, Courage the Cowardly Dog and What’s New, Scooby-Doo? were removed from the streamer, reportedly due to non-renewed licensing deals.

HBO Max has removed numerous fan-favorite animated series in recent years, including mid-century classics and Cartoon Network favorites such as Ed, Edd n Eddy, Teen Titans, The Powerpuff Girls, The Flintstones, Looney Tunesand many more.

Although it targets a different audience, South Park will also leave HBO Max in the U.S. on August 5, 2025, following an exclusive streaming deal with Paramount+.

The remaining Cartoon Network content on HBO Max has dwindled to about a dozen titles, such as Adventure Time, Craig of the Creek, and Gumball. However, several of these shows have licensing deals set to expire this fall.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s recent presentation at Annecy suggests a continued investment in existing Cartoon Network franchises, many of which are receiving spinoffs, sequels, or reboots. Still, these new projects aren’t guaranteed to appear on HBO Max. For instance, the Steven Universe spinoff Lars of the Stars is heading to Prime Video.

These content removals appear part of a broader strategic shift by Warner Bros. Discovery to focus HBO Max on adult and family-oriented programming, while de-emphasizing legacy children’s content. The company also appears increasingly open to licensing its animated properties to third-party platforms.

Many shows remain available for digital purchase or streaming on platforms such as iTunes, Prime Video, and Tubi – the latter of which is free – but some of the Warner Bros. Discovery castoffs are not available to watch or purchase anywhere through legal means.
