DNEG has announced a new vfx and animation studio in Sydney, Australia, where the outfit’s first production will be George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa. Job postings for the new studio, and all other DNEG locations, are available here.

Studio details:

  • DNEG Sydney will set up shop in 2023 in Pyrmont, Sydney’s central technology district, and have a capacity of up to 500 seats for workers. The studio will be a full-service vfx studio, heading complex vfx projects for film and tv, starting with the aforementioned Furiosa. It will also host a new branch of DNEG Animation.
  • DNEG’s arrival in Sydney is backed by the Australian State Government of New South Wales and its $250 million Jobs Plus Program which provides eligible companies with financial support to establish and expand their footprint in the region.
  • Vfx supervisor and Australian national Andrew Jackson has relocated from DNEG London to take the reins at DNEG Sydney. Jackson was vfx supervisor on Christopher Nolan’s Tenet – which won him an Oscar for best special visual effects, and Mad Max: Fury Road. His most recent work was done on Nolan’s upcoming biopic Oppenheimer.
  • Joining Jackson at the new studio is vfx supervisor Dan Bethell, who comes to the company from Rising Sun Pictures. Bethell will serve as vfx supervisor on Furiosa, and is familiar with the franchise having also worked on Fury Road. More recent credits include Thor: Love and Thunder and Spider-Man: Homecoming.
  • In a release, Jackson said: “I am thrilled to take up this position at the new DNEG Sydney studio, and to be back on home turf, working once again with George Miller following our work together on Fury Road. DNEG’s entrance into the Australian market will provide us with access to a new pool of talented individuals, including some of the most imaginative minds in the industry, and I am delighted to be working with the new crew that we are building to deliver some truly inspirational effects.”
  • DNEG currently employs nearly 8,000 people globally at its offices and studios in L.A., Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, London, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Mumbai, and now Sydney.
