Will SpongeBob join Simba, Aladdin, and Shrek on Broadway, or will he suffer the fate of a long line of cartoon characters who almost-but-never-quite-reached Broadway stardom like Fred and Wilma Flintstone and Betty Boop?

Today at Nickelodeon’s upfront pitches to advertisers in New York, they previewed the development of a SpongeBob theatrical musical being developed for Broadway:

A report in Entertainment Weekly expanded on Nick’s announcement, claiming that Aerosmith, T.I., Sara Bareilles, Lady Antebellum, and John Legend will provide original music, and stage dirctor Tina Landau will helm the play.

While we’ll have to wait a little longer to find out if SpongeBob achieves Broadway fame, rest assured that he’s already a stage star in Asia:
