Glassworks VFX Closes After Nearly 30 Years, Citing ‘Exceptionally Challenging Market Conditions’
Renowned effects studio Glassworks VFX is shutting its doors after nearly three decades of operation, citing “exceptionally challenging market conditions.”
Founded in 1996 by CEO Hector Macleod, Glassworks became a leading name in the global VFX industry, eventually operating out of studios in London, Amsterdam, and Barcelona. The company gained a strong reputation for its high-end work across commercials, features, TV, live events, and digital content.
Glassworks’ commercial division executed eye-catching work for global brands like Adidas, Netflix, FAGE, and e.l.f. On the narrative side, the studio’s more recent credits include Kaos (Netflix), Society of the Snow (Netflix), and The Rig (Amazon Prime), among many others.
In a statement announcing the closure, the studio explained: “The past 15 months have been a turbulent period in both the commercial and narrative spheres, with decreased opportunities exacerbated by the increased pressure of global competition. For a studio that has given so much to the world of visual artistry, to be forced to close its doors under such circumstances is truly heartbreaking.”
The company’s struggles mirror a wider crisis in the VFX industry, which has recently seen shuttering and downsizing at other major studios including Technicolor, The Mill, MPC, and Jellyfish Pictures.
In its announcement, Glassworks emphasized the company’s historic contribution to the industry and hopes for the brand’s legacy: “Founded in 1996 by CEO Hector Macleod, Glassworks wasn’t just a company; it was a vanguard of creativity. It fostered an environment where artistic boundaries were constantly pushed, and where the most complex visions were brought to breathtaking life. The name became synonymous with uncompromising quality, audacious innovation, and a deeply personalized service.”
The studio had earlier closed its Amsterdam branch, initially claiming its London team would remain operational, but the full closure of the company has now been confirmed. The decision was made following a comprehensive review by the board, which has appointed Castle Hill Insolvency to handle the liquidation process.
Reflecting on the impact Glassworks has had over the years, the company added: “Glassworks has been a legendary presence in the visual effects industry, revered for its incredible talent and groundbreaking work over three decades.”
The statement continued: “Glassworks’ commitment to nurturing talent has left an indelible mark, with countless alumni now contributing significantly to the wider VFX landscape and carrying a piece of that pioneering spirit with them. Our thoughts are with every single individual who was part of the Glassworks family. Their talent and craft have enriched our screens and imaginations, etched into the history of visual effects and continuing to inspire generations of artists to come.”
