The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced this afternoon the 10 films that have ben shortlisted for the visual effects Oscar. In alphabetical order, the films are:

  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier
  • Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
  • Godzilla
  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
  • Interstellar
  • Maleficent
  • Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb
  • Transformers: Age of Extinction
  • X-Men: Days of Future Past

Eight of the films that Cartoon Brew identified in its VFX Oscar predictions made it to the shortlist. As we wrote in that earlier piece, there are three frontrunners in the category:

  • Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
    VFX company: Weta Digital
  • Guardians of the Galaxy
    VFX companies: Moving Picture Company, Framestore, Method Studios, Sony Pictures Imageworks and others

  • Interstellar
    VFX company: Double Negative

The shortlist was determined by the Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee. All members of the Visual Effects Branch will now be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the shortlisted films on Saturday, January 10, 2015, and after that screening, the members will nominate five films.

The Oscar nominations will be announced on Thursday, January 15, 2015.
