“Gravity” and “Frozen” Rule the VES Awards

The VES Awards, otherwise known as The Only Awards Show Where The Lone Ranger Can Win An Award For Something, were presented last night at the Beverly Hilton by the Visual Effects Society. The big winner was Gravity, which took home six awards, while Disney’s Frozen swept all four animated feature categories. The TV series Game of Thrones and the PETA commercial “98% Human,” produced by the Mill, each took home three awards. And, The Lone Ranger won an award too.

At the show, visual effects legend Douglas Trumbull presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to John Dykstra (Star Wars, Spider-Man 2). Sandra Bullock also made a surprise appearance to present the VES Visionary Award to Gravity director Alfonso Cuaron. It’s telling of the VES Awards’ stature within the film industry that both Bullock and Cuaron appeared last night. ASIFA-Hollywood’s comparatively low-rent Annie Awards couldn’t even get Steven Spielberg to show in person this year to accept a lifetime achievement award.

    • SarahJesness

Yeah, I didn’t expect it to go in that direction. Ah well. Good animation, especially for a commercial.

      • Funkybat

(In J. Walter Weatherman voice) And THAT’S why you don’t leave weapons lying around zoos…..

Yeah, Frozen! All Frozen need now is that billion dollar club membership and the two Oscars.

    • john f

I’m so floored Frozen didn’t get an Oscar Best Picture nomination. This was truly a film that deserved it.

      • George Comerci

for sure! I was really hoping the academy would recognize it and put it as a best picture, it was definitely better than any of the ones nomiated

      • swen

Minus the song sequences…I think there should be special category for “animated musical” that Frozen is…

  • Strong Enough

Is John Dykstra related to greg dykstra who works at Pixar?

  • CC

whaaat How did Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 not even get nominated for character animation or environment?! Say what you will about the story but the animation in Cloudy beats everyone by a mile.
