Oscar-nominated director Don Hertzfeldt, whose new short World of Tomorrow had its world premiere last night at the Sundance Film Festival, has announced that his next feature film project will be called Antarctica. Snoot Entertainment, producer of films such as Morgan Spurlock’s The Greatest Story Ever Sold and the thriller The Guest, has optioned the script, which is described as “an animated, genre-defying adventure which explores the world’s coldest continent.”

Hertzfeldt will direct the film. Notably, Antarctica represents the first time that the filmmaker will work with a crew of animators instead of doing everything by himself. Hertzfeldt had animated by himself all of his earlier films, including his debut feature It’s Such a Beautiful Day.

In a written statement, Hertzfeldt says that he’s looking forward with a team:

Antarctica is an unusual project that’s been turning around in my head for a very long time, uncertain how it would get made, and I’m excited to actually have the chance now to take the plunge with Keith, Jess, and their brave team. After twenty years of animating alone, this will also mark the first time I’ll have the opportunity to work with a talented team of animators, and I’m looking forward to being able to walk into a room of hard-working artists every day and telling them that everything they’re doing is wrong.”

Hertzfeldt will produce Antarctica with Snoot Entertainment’s Keith Calder and Jessica Calder. Hertzfeldt’s manager Jeremy Platt will executive-produce and Snoot’s Roxanne Benjamin will co-produce.
