‘Kung Fu Panda 3′ Pushed Back to Avoid ‘Star Wars’

DreamWorks Animation has pushed the release of Kung Fu Panda 3 from December 23, 2015 to March 18, 2016. The move means that Po and pals won’t compete head-to-head with the Disney juggernaut Star Wars: The Force Awakens which is slated for a December 18th release.

Kung Fu Panda is one of DWA’s most treasured properties, and we want to make sure it is positioned where it has the best chance to reach the broadest audience,” Fox president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson told Deadline. “In reviewing the competitive landscape, which we do on an ongoing basis, we feel that the spring availability does just that — gives KFP the maximum amount of air to breathe in order to have a long, successful run.”

Last month DreamWorks delayed Bureau Of Otherworldly Operations from its June 2015 release to an as-yet-unannounced date. Currently, the studio’s lone 2015 release is Home on March 27.

Wow. That’ll be the first time since 2009 that DWA released just one film. And that sucks because Kung Fu Panda 3 was the only DWA film I was looking forward to.

  • If Only…

Smart move. If only they did the same with The Princess and the Frog and Winnie-the-Pooh.

And Home itself was pushed back. They’re kind of indecisive about release dates and I wonder if it has to do with fixing their movie as much as releasing them when the competition isn’t so robust. If that’s the only issue, then they’re never going to release any movie.

So… This means that “Home” is going to be the only DreamWorks film that will be released in 2015. Which is going to be up against “Insurgent”, and the seventh “Fast and the Furious” movie. And even then, now “Kung-Fu Panda 3″ will have to compete with “Allegiant part one” and “Dawn of Justice”. All they did was create two problems while only solving one.

It’s not like their releasing it on the same day, their probably doing that because something else.

So they moved to avoid Star Wars to a date that’s a week before Batman V Superman, a week after Warcraft, and two weeks after Disney Animation’s Zootopia. That makes sense how??? Even though Kung Fu Panda 3 would have to deal with Star Wars, it was still a prime Christmas spot. I think Katzenberg became skittish about 2016 and wanted Poo to act as a tentpole.

Wow, what is it with Dreamworks and their constantly changing release dates?

  • Toonio

So what will they delay to avoid a ‘World War?

… Me And My Shadow is still scheduled for release, if I’m correct.
