Historical Animated GIFs by Kevin J. Weir

VCU Brandcenter student Kevin J. Weir finds public domain images on the Library of Congress Flickr stream and turns them into entertaining animated GIFs. The technique is a throwback to the work of Stan Vanderbeek and Terry Gilliam, but Kevin’s ideas are plenty fresh.

Fascinating! It’s great to see work from my old school (although I went to VCU art school, not Brandcenter).

This is what Terry Gilliam might have done had he kept developing as an animator beyond the year 1979. Kevin should copyright what he’s doing before some version of Ken Burns does. He is onto something fresh with this.

That’s pretty cool, why not make a feature film documentary type thing about a fake event using this technique. Very interesting.
