VIDEOS: Exclusive Behind-The-Scenes Look At The 2D Animation and Puppets in ‘Ask the Storybots’

Cartoon Brew spoke yesterday with Jibjab co-founder Evan Spiridellis about the studio’s rule-breaking preschool series for Netflix, Ask the Storybots.

Today we continue our deep-dive into the production of the series with two more exclusive behind-the-scenes videos.

In the first video, Ask the Storybots animation director Jeff Gill and production designer Nikolas Ilic discuss how they gave distinct personalities and traits to the show’s main characters, a task made more challenging by the fact that all of the characters share a similar tubular design. (Ilic, we are pleased to note, was also a participant in the 2011 edition of Cartoon Brew’s Student Animation Festival with his student film, Sheared.)

The second video explores the production of a laugh-out-loud sequence from the episode “Why Is the Sky Blue?” in which the Storybots try to find out the answer to that question from a tortured artist. Production team members Aron Bothman and Megan McShane explain within how they created the puppet and sets:

Join us on Friday for the two final videos about the production of Ask the Storybots.

I’ve watched every episode of both Ask the Storybots and Storybots Super Songs with my 2.5 year old and we both love the shows. It’s been great to see all the various approaches in style to the segments of the show. Thanks for sharing the behind the scenes stuff!
