“The Baby Peas”

The Baby Peas were created by musician/voice actor will.i.am to immortalize his hip hop group The Black Eyed Peas (featuring younger versions of will.i.am, Fergie, Taboo, and Apl.De.Ap). According to their press release:

“The Baby Peas are a fusion of the “Little Rascals” mixed with the “Peanuts Gang”, with the edge of “Family Guy” and “The Simpsons.” Then add some Black Eyed Peas music vibe with the classical approach of the W.B’s Looney Toons and that’s The Baby Peas!

Well, I’m not sure they can live up to that hype – but the initial videos are certainly well made. They were produced at Dipdive, Inc., will.i.am’s digital creative agency. Key members of the animation team include executive creative director Pasha Shapiro, creative directors Ernst Weber and Huan Ngheim, and executive producer Julia Pistor (Lemony Snicket, Jimmy Neutron, The Rugrats Movie). Here’s the latest music video:

  • Bud

Like, if like, I hear, like, “Like” one more, like, time, I’ll, like scream.

    • Some of the lip-syncing seems really odd… but its, LIKE, pretty great for a music video.

  • cbat628

I’m indifferent towards the second video. The first one though… I wish I could get those two minutes back.

    • cbat628

By the way, it’s not because of the visuals. I find them pretty appealing for the most part. I just wish they could be paired with better subject matter.

  • Rufus

They could’ve just said “it’s like a Pixar made tv-show, but much better, with new imaginative progressive music!”

    Visually, okay. Looks good.

Ideawise – what the hell were you thinking?

  • Joe

Love it. Changed my view to will.I.am.
Envy great sence of stylistic freedom especially in 2-nd video.

  • Matt

Surprise surprise. Majority of animation community talks crap about the “hip” Black Eyed Peas. We’re all hipsters here.

Sometimes I wish people would stop pushing mainstream stuff away solely because it is mainstream.

    Go will.i.am.

    • Ben

It’s about the whole package. The music is awful, the lyrics are insultingly awful.

      Also, the characters are hideous.

There were some nice parts to the second video in terms of style, but that’s only one piece of the puzzle.

  • alan

lip sync aside i thought they were both pretty damn good.

  • Taylor

Polished. The XO video was one of the more elaborate animated music videos I can remember anytime recently, as budgets for those sorts of things have certainly dwindled. Glad to see will.i.am branching out with his own creative agency and allowing his success to be a gateway for others to create and get paid for it. kudos all around.

  • Spencer

Loved the first one, hated the second.

But I’m biased. I just hate the Black Eyed Peas in general. :/

  • Conor

There are some interesting visual ideas in the second video, but I can’t help but be turned of by the general inexpressiveness of the faces. Cold dead eyes and mechanical mouths. The lip sync on the Fergie character is especially distracting.

  • Damato

That group was once clever and wrote intelligent songs. Then Fergie joined.

  • I find this almost very appealing! I just wish I didn’t keep getting distracted by the weirdly blank eyes and the awkward robotic expressions. But I like pretty much everything else.

  • I’m not a fan of Will.I.Am and co, though those animations are really well done and with many details! Bravo

  • Stupid song; on about a 5th grade level of emotion and musically immature as well. All those hyped promises by the main guy are pure nonsense. There’s nothing in this even remotely connected to Looney Tunes or the Simpsons. This guy has an ego the size of LA and the intellect of a lawnmower. These guys are the 2000’s version of Sly and the Family Stone, or so they think. Nothing could be further from the truth. I couldn’t have more contempt for this phoney bunch of wannabes if I tried. P.U.

  • Thanks everyone for your kind words as well as the critic :)
Completely admit lypsync problems, my only excuse is what entire production is done by two people.

Surprised what so many post are about music considering this is animation forum but i guess it’s understandable considering high profile status of the band.

  • Iritscen

Well, I really enjoyed the animation in the second film (didn’t get to watch the first yet). It looks like a lot of work went into constantly surprising the viewer with new visuals. I found the whole thing really appealing. If I had one criticism, it’s that Fergie’s head looked 5 times bigger compared to her body than the other members of the group. Maybe that was just my imagination.

Anyway, I agree that people should be commenting more on the quality of the job done by the animators. No one’s going to change their minds about the Black Eyed Peas one way or another based on your comments on this blog.
