Gorillaz Animated Series Set To Premiere In 2018

New details have emerged about an animated series based on the cartoon band Gorillaz.

Ten episodes of the Gorillaz series will be produced for release in 2018, according to co-creator Jamie Hewlett, who spoke about the project in an interview yesterday.

“I’ll direct the first and the last one,” he told Exclaim, “but we’ll have to get someone in to direct the other episodes. I think even attempting to do it all by myself will kill me.”

Notably, the Gorillaz crew will all be 2D. Said Hewlett:

I think it’s a beautiful style of animation. Everybody does cg now, and it is great when you’re making backgrounds, like environments and landscapes, but not the actual characters. I’m still very much inspired by the work of Chuck Jones, and I love that animation. It’s art. I’d like to keep the characters in that style for the rest of this campaign. So the characters on the show will be 2D, but everything else is up for grabs.

Hewlett does not rule out the use of live-action footage and other mixed-media elements, like collage and cg, within the series format. The series could also feature appearances by artists who appear on Gorillaz’ new Humanz album, as well as other guest stars.

The most recent Gorillaz video, “Saturnz Barz (Spirit House),” was released last month to promote the release of Humanz:

I’m super excited. I suppose everyone is hoping for 22 minute episodes, but based on the quality of animation we see in the music videos I suppose that might be really hard to do throughout 10 episodes even if they are shorter than 20 mins. It would also be cool to see them adapt the storyline of the first three albums but it seems like their sticking to the fourth.

    • I think it will depend on how they will collaborate on the actual animation. If it’s more than one studio working on the episodes, we could get it up to par with the music video quality, or close enough. Most animated shows that are 2D will have at least two studios working at the same time.

Wow. A Gorillaz TV show is really intriguing for me. Yeah, I really prefer the idea of the character being 2D animated. Even though I love CGI, its great we get to find or see something that isn’t all 3D. Now some things I’m wondering is, first, what studio is going to produce it, what network will it be picked up on, if not, will it air on You Tube, or on a streaming service like Hulu or Netflix. Just things i’m wondering.

Another thing I like to address or analyze is the 2D aspect. My curiosity is, how the show is going to be produced. The co-creator said the characters will be 2-D, but what kind of 2-D? I would assume it would be flash animated because many other shows used it, but I really hope the character are actually be hand drawn. I mean, he did say he is inspired by animators like Chuck Jones, so maybe they will take inspiration from the classic cartoons, instead of something like Steven Universe or Adventure Time like many cartoons are doing. My wish, and something I really hope they would do is have them be hand drawn, animated at 12-24 drawings per second, and take inspiration from animators like Chuck Jones and Tex Avery, with stylized drawings, with lively and very fluid movements and character poses like, you know something that has the style of Gorillaz, with the aesthetics of classic cartoons like Looney Tunes or Tom & Jerry, that is if they have the time and budget possible for that. So hopefully it will be hand-drawn. Now everything else, if you see the video above, you’ll see the style of 2-D characters in live-action or 3D background. Now honestly, if you are going to go 2-D with the characters, they simply have the whole show be entirely 2-D, to be honest.

Now, here are in my opinion, 2 ways they could handle or produce the show.

    The Gumball Approach:
Flash-Animated 2-D characters, with Live Action Backgrounds, something akin to The Amazing World of Gumball.

    The Chuck Jones Approach:
Hand-drawn animated characters, with fully animated backgrounds, in the style of the previous Gorillaz videos, with inspiration from Chuck Jones.

I’m over analyzing, I know, but I’m just so curious with what they are going to do with the show. Personally, I’d prefer going full hand drawn, but who knows, all I know is that in the end, they will deliver something thats unique and interesting.

  • awh man, I kinda thought they’d come out with the series sooner seeing how they just dropped their newest album. Been a Gorillaz fan since 2001. Let’s just hope we don’t go to war with North Korea and are all wiped out by a Nuclear Holocaust before 2018 happens…

Couldn’t have said it better myself. I’m really glad Jamie will do 2D animation for this project, and I agree with him on the cg (it’s great, just too much of it as of late). I do hope that in pursuing 2D/hand drawn animation, they can make it as fluid as possible like their shorts (some of them) and their music videos. I’m excited to see what they will do, and hopefully that it can be seen on Netflix perhaps, if not Adult Swim.

Well, it’s about goddamned time. Cant wait.

(No word yet on where this will be seen?)

I like Gorillaz, but I would love to see The Residents (anyone here heard of them?) get their own animated series.

Nice! Something to look forward to. The art is stellar.
    Jamie Hewelett’s cool.

This is exciting news! I love that they’re going to play with mixed media while keeping the characters 2d. I would like to know which studio will be animating the show; if that has been decided yet.

    When it said:
‘All the characters will be 2D’ i just thought, what about the other characters ?
