ChaO ChaO

It will be several months before audiences get the chance to see the buzzy anime feature “ChaO” in theaters, but Japanese distributor Toei has released a dazzling new music video for the film’s theme song “ChaO!”, performed by Japanese pop star Koda Kumi.

The video features scenes from the film that immerse viewers in a futuristic world where humans and mermaids coexist. The film’s story turns on Stefan, a reserved office worker at a shipbuilding company, whose quiet life is turned upside down when ChaO, a bold and affectionate mermaid princess, unexpectedly proposes to him. What unfolds is a whimsical tale of cross-species romance, culture shock, and personal growth.

Directed by Yasuhiro Aoki and produced by Japanese powerhouse Studio 4°C, the film won the jury award at Annecy last month and was one of the most talked-about competition titles at the French festival. “ChaO” features character design by Yamato Kojima and music by Takatsugu Muramatsu.

Although GKIDS, which holds North American distribution rights to the film, hasn’t shared details about the film’s theatrical run just yet, ChaO will launch in Japanese cinemas on August 15, distributed by Toei.
