Evangelion Evangelion

A new Neon Genesis Evangelion television series is officially in development, with NieR creator Yoko Taro handling the show’s writing. Studio Khara announced the project during the final program of Evangelion:30+; 30th Anniversary of Evangelion over the weekend.

The series will be co-produced with CloverWorks (Spy x Family), marking the franchise’s first completely new TV installment in years.

Story details, release timing, and cast have not yet been revealed, but the creative lineup has already drawn significant attention. Most notably, Taro, the creator and writer behind the mega-popular NieR and Drakengard game franchises, is attached as series composer and scriptwriter.

Best known for his bleak, philosophical narratives and experimental storytelling structures, Yoko Taro is an influential figure in Japanese game development, with NieR: Automata becoming a global crossover hit. His involvement is another example of the thinning line between game and anime production in Japan; consider the extensive animation work that Hideo Kojima is developing with his Death Stranding franchise.

The series will be directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki, a longtime Evangelion collaborator and director of FLCL, alongside Toko Yatabe, who has worked extensively within the franchise. Music will also be composed by Keiichi Okabe, another key NieR creative voice.

Original Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno is not listed among the lead creative credits, suggesting the project may represent a significant shift for the franchise.

With no footage or synopsis yet available, the announcement positions the new series as one of the most intriguing anime projects currently in development, fueled by its creative team’s well-regarded profiles for atmosphere and story crafting.
