Netflix Unveils New Trailer For Shingo Yamashita’s ‘Cosmic Princess Kaguya!’
Netflix has unveiled the main trailer for Cosmic Princess Kaguya!, the feature-length directorial debut of Shingo Yamashita, best known for his work on the opening sequences of titles including Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and Urusei Yatsura.
The film premieres January 22, 2026, and marks the first major project from Yamashita’s new Studio Chromato, produced in partnership with Studio Colorido, which is handling animation. Character designs are handled by Hechima (The Idolmaster Gakuen) and Akihiro Nagae (Drifting Home).
The release is the latest in Netflix’s ongoing collaboration with Colorido, which signed a multi-film deal with the streamer in 2022, the first between Netflix and a Japanese studio. That agreement yielded features like Drifting Home and My Oni Girl, further positioning Colorido as a key anime partner at Netflix.
According to Yamashita:
This is my first full-length original animated film. I poured into it everything I’ve learned about visual expression, my love for unique characters, and my deep affection for the internet culture that’s continued since the 1990s. It’s a bright, fun film — so please sit back, relax, and enjoy it!
The director’s debut feature expands one of Japan’s oldest stories, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, into a contemporary music-powered reimagining set in Tsukuyomi, a virtual space where creativity and identity freely unfold. The film centers on high schooler Iroha Sakayori, who discovers a mysterious baby emerging from a glowing telephone pole, only to watch it rapidly grow into a headstrong teen who calls herself Kaguya. At Kaguya’s insistence, the pair launch a streaming career in Tsukuyomi, with Iroha producing and writing songs and Kaguya performing them on the platform’s dazzling virtual stages. As Iroha and Kaguya rise in Tsukuyomi, ominous forces begin closing in to reclaim Kaguya for the moon, propelling a modern retelling that blends friendship, spectacle, and the mythic roots of Japan’s earliest folktale.
Cosmic Princess Kaguya! debuts on Netflix on January 22, 2026.
