Top Story: A Historic Box Office Weekend: Five Of The Top Ten Films Are Animated Features
Daytime Emmys 2020 Daytime Emmys 2020

The nominations for the 47th annual Daytime Emmy Awards, presented by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS), have been announced.

Among animated nominees, two Disney series about princesses lead the pack with seven nominations apiece. One is Elena of Avalor, a Disney Junior show that stars the House of Mouse’s first Hispanic princess. It garnered an eighth nod for the hour-long special Elena of Avalor: The Magic Within. The series has won a Daytime Emmy for casting for the last two years running.

The other is Disney Channel’s Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure, a spin-off from the 2010 feature Tangled. It too won Daytime Emmys in the past two years, for individual achievement in animation. The third-most-nominated show is The Rocketeer (five nominations), which debuted on Disney Junior and Disney Channel in November. Loosely based on the 1991 live-action feature of the same name, it follows a young girl who derives superhero powers of flight from her jet pack.

Disney shows dominate this year’s list: Disney Junior and Disney Channel account for 25 and 19 nominations respectively in the animation categories. Netflix (22) and Amazon Prime Video (14) lead the streaming pack. This year also sees the debut of streamer Apple TV+, which has two nominations in the animation categories: one for Peanuts spin-off Snoopy in Space (short format children’s program) and one for the live-action Ghostwriter (main title and graphic design).

One animation category has yet to announce its contenders: individual achievement in animation. NATAS issued the following statement: “Individual achievement in animation is a juried award with live panel judging. Due to the ongoing health crisis, the entries in this category have not yet been judged. Results from this juried award process will be announced at a later date.”

Awards in major categories will be presented in a two-hour special telecast on Friday, June 26 on CBS — the first time the Daytime Emmys have been shown on tv in five years. Other winners will be announced in July. For the full list of nominees, visit the Emmy website.
