The Association of Japanese Animations (AJA) has announced the name, date, and venue for its previously announced international anime awards program, with the inaugural Nippon Anime Awards set for November 21, 2027, at Tokyo’s SGC Hall Ariake.

The organization revealed the details on Monday, November 2, during the closing event of Tokyo Anime Next, a four-day program held alongside the Tokyo International Film Festival and its TIFFCOM market.

The Nippon Anime Awards are being established to recognize outstanding anime productions and the artists behind them. The goal, according to its inaugural backers, is to reach audiences both in Japan and internationally. Alongside the ceremony, AJA plans to collaborate with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government on initiatives supporting new business opportunities and the development of emerging talent.

In a release, the organization explained:

The name “Nippon Anime Awards” reflects our commitment to honoring the history and culture of Japanese anime while carrying its enduring appeal into the future. The awards will recognize outstanding anime works and celebrate the achievements of those involved in the industry, sharing the appeal of Japanese anime with audiences in Japan and around the world. The aim is to establish the Nippon Anime Awards as a leading anime awards program representing Japan that will be loved and celebrated for years to come.

“We hope to share the appeal and potential of anime to an even wider audience around the world and build that future together with all of you,” AJA president Kazuko Ishikawa elaborated during the announcement.

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike also pledged local support in a message shared at the event: “The Tokyo Metropolitan Government will continue to provide strong support for anime and everyone involved in bringing it to life.”

Award categories, eligibility requirements, and details on the voting and selection process were not revealed in this week’s announcement, but with a year to go before the inaugural edition, we’ll keep you posted as we learn more.
