No One Expected ‘The Boss Baby’ Would Get An Oscar Nomination
The Boss Baby shall from here on be referred to as the Academy Award-nominated masterpiece The Boss Baby.
The Twitterverse is packed with shocked reactions from film critics and fans alike. No one saw it coming apparently, even though we predicted this would happen.
The reactions are understandable. With just a 52% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes, The Boss Baby is the most poorly-reviewed film to be nominated in the Academy’s animated feature category since Shark Tale was nominated in 2005. But whereas in 2005, there were just 11 eligible films, with few standouts, the current slate was packed with amazing animated films that showcased feature animation filmmaking at its finest:
BEST REVIEWED FEATURE ANIMATION OSCAR CONTENDERS
Big Bad Fox &…Tales—100%
Birdboy: The Forgotten Children—100
Girl without Hands—100
Window Horses—100
In This Corner…World—98
Coco—97
Ethel & Ernest—97
Breadwinner—92
Lego Batman—91
Mary & the Witch’s Flower—91
A Silent Voice—91— Cartoon Brew (@cartoonbrew) December 20, 2017
We’ll have more thoughts shortly about what happened in our Oscar analysis, but in the meantime, here are some of the befuddled and irritated reactions to The Boss Baby’s nomination:
Can't really argue with that selection. #OscarNoms #Oscars2018 #BossBaby pic.twitter.com/vch539ZNrX

people being mad about Boss Baby getting an Oscar nomination don't understand that this is a huge step forward for babies, films made by babies, and baby representation on the silver screen.

Film Theory: Should the Boss Baby win every single Oscar?
— Game Theory Rejects (@GameTheoryRejct) January 23, 2018
for the oscars, the boss baby gets a nomination while anime films like koe no katachi/a silent voice do not
the boss baby is thus a superior anime and should be added onto myanimelist as a 10/10 film— かすっち (ルビ:kastelpls) (@highimpactsex) January 23, 2018
Oh it hurts to hear "The Boss Baby" at #OscarNoms

MY THERAPIST: How are you feeling?
ME: I just think it's funny how The Boss Baby got an Oscar nom for best animated feature and The LEGO Batman Movie got snubbed I mean LEGO Batman was the first film in years to truly capture Batman's identity and internal struggle and—#Oscars— Devan Coggan (@devancoggan) January 23, 2018
The Boss Baby has more Oscar nominations (1) than The Big Lebowski, Groundhog Day, The Long Goodbye and The Shining combined (0)
— Mark Berman (@markberman) January 23, 2018
So the contenders for best animated films are The Boss Baby, The Breadwinner, Coco, Ferdinand, and Loving Vincent. In a year when “In This Corner of the World” came out… this is why I hate the oscars #Oscars2018

Amidst the hoopla, the nomination of BOSS BABY for Best Animation reminds us that, whatever happens, the Oscars are essentially ridiculous.
— Mark Kermode (@KermodeMovie) January 23, 2018
I generally don’t give a shit about the Oscars (or any award show really) but if we’re nominating fucking Boss Baby and refusing to acknowledge Captain Underpants that is some bulllllllllllllllshiiiiiiiit.
