The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has whittled the list of 20 films that had been shortlisted for the 2018 visual effects Academy Award down to 10 films.

Here are the films listed in alphabetical order:

  • Ant-Man and the Wasp
  • Avengers: Infinity War
  • Black Panther
  • Christopher Robin
  • First Man
  • Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
  • Mary Poppins Returns
  • Ready Player One
  • Solo: A Star Wars Story
  • Welcome to Marwen

The visual effects branch executive committee determined this shortlist. All members of the Academy’s visual effects branch will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the shortlisted films on Saturday, January 5, 2019, in what is commonly referred to as the “vfx bake-off.” Following the screenings, members will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration.

We previewed the vfx Oscar contenders back in October. All five of the likely contenders that we highlighted made the cut for this sortlist, as well as one of our likely outliers — Welcome to Marwen (pictured at top).

The Academy Award nominations will be announced on Tuesday, January 22, 2019.
