‘Zootopia 2’ Is Officially The Highest-Grossing Hollywood Animated Film In History
It’s official, Zootopia 2 has become the highest-grossing animated Hollywood release of all time, surpassing Pixar’s Inside Out 2 at the global box office.
With a worldwide total of $1.703 billion after the past weekend, the film also ranks as the ninth-highest-grossing movie ever released, animated or otherwise.
The milestone was confirmed in a studio announcement on Sunday, with Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman crediting the film’s success to its worldwide audience:
This milestone belongs first and foremost to the fans around the world whose enthusiasm made it possible. We’re incredibly proud of our filmmakers Jared Bush, Byron Howard, and Yvett Merino and the entire team at Walt Disney Animation Studios for creating a film that connects so deeply with audiences everywhere. ‘Zootopia 2’ is an extraordinary achievement, and we’re grateful to everyone who helped bring it to life
The numbers paint a truly exceptional picture of Zootopia 2’s theatrical run. The film has earned $390 million domestically and a massive $1.313 billion internationally, making it the top global MPA (Motion Picture Association) feature released in 2025. International markets have driven a disproportionate share of the film’s success, particularly in China, where it has grossed $619 million to date, ranking as the highest total ever for an MPA release in the territory.
Sequels, Sequels, Sequels
In its release, Disney also boasted that the studio now occupies the top three spots on the all-time animated box office chart, with Zootopia 2 at number one, Inside Out 2 at number two, and Frozen 2 in third place. Combined, the two Zootopia films have now generated more than $2.73 billion globally.
Z2 opened over the 5-day Thanksgiving weekend last year, debuting with a record-breaking $559.5 million worldwide in its first five days. That was the largest global opening ever for an animated film, though over a longer holiday window than most films get. It also became the fastest animated and PG-rated MPA release to cross the $1 billion mark.
Other Box Office Notes
- Charlie the Wonderdog: Viva Kids hasn’t reported numbers yet for Charlie the Wonderdog, but we’re certainly curious how the film did during its opening weekend.
- The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarPants made $2.3 million domestically over the weekend, showing off strong legs and pushing the film’s domestic total to $67.1 million. Internationally, the film made $6.1 million, bringing its worldwide total to $144.2 million.
- That trails Angel’s bible-based feature David, which opened stronger than SpongeBob, but hasn’t had the same legs. The film grossed $1.5 million in the most recent frame, bringing its domestic total to $77.5 million.
- Madagascar (the first one) got a 20th anniversary re-release, but it doesn’t seem like many people noticed. The film made just $406,000 from 1,083 theaters for a per-location average of just $374.
- GKIDS’s release of All You Need is Kill fared slightly better across its opening weekend, making $310,679 from 765 theaters for a similarly mild per-theater average of $406.
Box office figures are still largely estimates at this point, although Disney shared these figures with us directly, so they’re likely more accurate than typical Monday figures posted by trade sites.
All other figures were taken from Box Office Mojo.
