Laika, The Gotham Launch Animation Accelerator For Emerging Filmmakers
The Gotham Film & Media Institute and Laika have announced a new initiative designed to bolster the careers of emerging animation filmmakers. The Laika x Gotham Animation Accelerator is a six-month program supporting early- to mid-career creators as they develop production-ready pitches for animated short films, with an emphasis on visual clarity, storytelling strength, and industry viability.
The accelerator is the first collaboration between the two organizations and represents The Gotham’s first program dedicated specifically to animation. It also signals an expansion of Gotham Week to more fully include animation-focused creators within its broader filmmaker development ecosystem.
“This fellowship marks The Gotham’s first dedicated initiative focused on animation and signals a significant expansion of Gotham Week,” said Jeffrey Sharp, Executive Director of The Gotham Film & Media Institute. “We’re honored to collaborate with Laika, a studio whose long-standing engagement with nonprofit and educational partners reflects a shared commitment to nurturing emerging creative voices.”
Selected fellows will participate in a structured program that combines mentorship, studio access, and industry exposure. Core program elements include:
-
-
- Individualized monthly mentorship sessions with industry professionals
- A curated one-day visit to Laika’s Portland, Oregon headquarters, including tours of Laika facilities, discussions with key team members, conversations about handcrafted and hybrid animation techniques, sessions on Laika’s filmmaker-led creative approach, and case studies inspired by Wildwood
- Preparation for and participation in Gotham Week programming elements (September – October 2026), with fellows presenting their work during a pitch event
- Visibility through Filmmaker Magazine features
-
In addition, fellows will participate in programming at the Annecy International Animation Festival, providing international exposure and networking opportunities.
“We’re thrilled to partner with Laika, a legendary animation studio at the forefront of innovation,” said Kia Brooks, Deputy Director of The Gotham Film & Media Institute. “By providing resources, mentorship, and industry access, this program will bring to life visions of this exciting cohort of artists.”
Laika Chief Marketing & Operations Officer David Burke added, “At Laika, we believe the future of animation depends on investing meaningfully in creators who are ready to push the medium forward.”
Applications open today, March 3, and close April 2, with the inaugural cohort announced in early May.
