Another Day of Life won best animated feature at the 33rd annual Goya Awards, the honors presented by the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences to honor the best in Spanish film production. Three other Spanish animated features were nominated in the category: Azahar, Bikes The Movie, and Memorias de un hombre en pijama.

Directed by Oscar-nominated Spaniard Raúl de la Fuente and Polish filmmaker Damian Nenow, the 86-minute film combines cg animation and documentary footage to recount the true-life adventures of Polish journalist Ryszard Kapuściński, who in his career covered 27 coups and revolutions around the world.

Adapted from Kapuściński’s book of the same name, Another Day of Life tells of the journalist’s experiences in Angola at the start of the country’s civil war in 1975, a Cold War-era proxy battle that was greatly intensified by the involvement of the United States and Russia:

Kapuściński is a brilliant veteran journalist but also an idealist, a defender of lost causes and revolutions. He convinces his bosses at the Polish Press Agency to send him to Angola where a bloody civil war has broken out on the eve of its independence. As he embarks on a seemingly suicidal road trip into the heart of Angola, his convictions and his relationship with his work will change forever.

The film had its world premiere last year at the Cannes Film Festival, where it screened out of competition. In December, it won Best European Animated Feature Film at the 31st European Film Awards.

Another Day of Life was produced by Platige Films (Poland) and Kanaki Films (Spain), and co-produced by Walking The Dog (Belgium), Wüste Film (Germany), Animations Fabrik (Germany), and Puppetworks (Hungary).

No American distribution deal has been announced at this time.
