Pixar Announces ‘Gatto,’ New Original Feature From Enrico Casarosa
Just three months after a small indie film about a black cat won the Oscar for best animated feature, Disney-Pixar has announced its own film starring a black cat.
Gatto is from Luca and La Luna director Enrico Casarosa. The film, set in Venice, Italy, follows a black cat named Nero. Per the official logline: “Indebted to a feline mob boss, Nero finds himself forced to forge an unexpected friendship that may finally lead him to his purpose…”
Other details revealed during the Pixar presentation at Annecy today:
* Nero dislikes water and likes music, and he befriends a street artist named Maya.
* The film is more stylized than earlier Pixar films, and has a painterly approach that incorporates 2d hand-painted textures and shaders (following a trend of other recent cg features like the Spider-Verse franchise and The Wild Robot).
* The film is produced by Andrea Warren, who also produced Luca.
Gatto is scheduled to premiere summer 2027. There are three Pixar films currently ahead of it: Elio (2025), Hoppers (2026), and Toy Story 5 (2026).
