Warner Bros. Pictures Animation is developing a new theatrical film based on Cartoon Network’s beloved superhero trio, The Powerpuff Girls, according to several industry reports. The project marks the latest attempt to bring Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup back to the big screen more than two decades after their first feature-length outing.

Here’s hoping this attempt finds more luck than some of the others.

We’ve not seen any confirmation that creator Craig McCracken will be involved, but the Cartoon Network legend did recently return to the franchise to develop an animated reboot for Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe. That project was announced in 2022 as a fresh take on the original series, expanding the world of Townsville while reuniting the girls with familiar allies and villains.

The Powerpuff Girls debuted in 1998 and quickly became one of Cartoon Network’s defining hits, spawning merchandise, video games, comics, and a 2002 theatrical feature. While that film struggled commercially, the franchise has remained one of the network’s most recognizable brands and a fan favorite.

The property has seen several revival attempts in recent years. A live-action television adaptation developed for The CW was ultimately abandoned after a troubled development process, and a leaked pilot generated widespread criticism online. The project was officially shelved in 2023.

Warner Bros. has not announced a release date, director, or casting details for the new feature. Additional information is expected as development progresses.
