Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Sony Pictures Animation has released the a new trailer for Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, the first of two sequels to the Oscar-winning feature Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018). The first of the two films will web-swing into theaters on June 2, 2023, with the latter debuting on March 29, 2024.

Sony’s synopsis for the next film reads: “After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders, and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.”

The trailer looks a lot like what we’d expect from a Spider-Verse trailer. The alternating color palettes, the superimposed comic book grain, and the brightly highlighted character movements are all there in abundance. And, of course, it’s all set to Blackway and Black Caviar’s What’s Up Danger, which has quickly become one of the most recognizable superhero themes of its generation.

The web-slinging sequel is co-directed by Joaquim Dos Santos (The Legend of Kora), Kemp Powers (co-director, Soul), and Justin K. Thompson (production designer, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse). It was co-written by Into the Spider-Verse screenwriters Phil Lord and Christopher Miller with MCU vet Dave Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings).

Lord and Miller produce alongside Avi Arad, Amy Pascal, and Christina Steinberg with co-producer Alonzo Ruvalcaba and executive producers Brian Michael Bendis, Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman, and Aditya Sood.

Across the Spider-Verse sees Miles Morales and Gwen Stacey team up with a new group of spider-people to confront new franchise villain The Spot, whose plan could have a disastrous effects across the full multiverse. In the trailer, Miles is told, “Being a Spider-Man is a sacrifice.” There’s also a clip of Miles’ father Jefferson Davis falling. Anyone with prior knowledge of the Miles Morales storyline will understand the implication of the sequence.

At last summer’s Annecy, where we caught up with the film’s three directors who let us know all about The Spot and their plans for the Spider-Verse two-part sequel. Check out the full video interview here.

Across the Spider-Verse’s incredible cast of spider-people boasts a similarly incredible voice cast. Joining returning actors Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, and Jake Johnson from the first film are Oscar Isaac as Spider-Man 2099, Issa Rae as Spider-Woman, Daniel Kaluuya as Spider-Punk, Jason Schwartzman as the Spot, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Vélez, Greta Lee, Rachel Dratch, Jorma Taccone, and Shea Whigham.
