‘The Simpsons Movie’ Sequel Set For July 2027
A day after the historic 37th season of The Simpsons hit the airwaves, Disney’s 20th Century Studios has officially announced and set a long-awaited sequel for a July 23, 2027, theatrical release, marking the first feature film for the franchise since 2007’s blockbuster The Simpsons Movie.
Plot and production details remain under wraps, but Disney teased the return with a poster featuring the show’s iconic pink donut covered in 2-shaped sprinkles and the tagline, “Homer’s coming back for seconds.” The announcement instantly sparked excitement among fans and longtime viewers who have followed the series’ evolution across decades and platforms and comes during a time when sentiments around the franchise feel high.

The long-rumored sequel replaces an untitled Marvel project on Disney’s calendar, leaving a yearlong gap between Avengers: Doomsday (Dec. 18, 2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (Dec. 17, 2027).
Created by Matt Groening and co-developed with James L. Brooks and Sam Simon, The Simpsons debuted as shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show in 1987 before premiering as a half-hour series in 1989. It has since become the longest-running animated show and sitcom in television history, recently renewed through season 40 (2028–29).
Voice actors Dan Castellaneta (Homer), Julie Kavner (Marge), Nancy Cartwright (Bart), and Yeardley Smith (Lisa) remain core to its enduring legacy and will surely be present for the film sequel.
The Simpsons’ first film, directed by series veteran David Silverman, earned $536 million worldwide on a $75 million budget, proving the property’s big-screen appeal and making all the more curious that a sequel took nearly two decades to materialize.
Speaking at Annecy earlier this summer, showrunner Matt Selman credited streaming on Disney+ for keeping The Simpsons fresh and reaching new audiences: “Now kids can watch it all, all the time, forever.”
With two decades of new stories and cultural moments since the family’s last cinematic adventure, The Simpsons 2 could bring Springfield’s irreverent humor to a whole new generation.
