Wish Wish

Walt Disney Animation Studios has released the first teaser for its next theatrical animated feature Wish, which will hit theaters on November 22.

In the trailer, we’re introduced to the film’s protagonist Asha as well as the villainous-looking King Magnifico, Asha’s pet goat Valentino, and Star, an anthropomorphic star that brings a load of magic with it when called down from the sky by Asha’s wish. We also get our first taste of the new original song “This Wish,” performed by Ariana DeBose.

Here’s what we know about the film:

  • Wish is directed by Oscar-winner Chris Buck (Frozen, Tarzan) and Fawn Veerasunthorn (animation department on Raya and the Last Dragon) from a screenplay by Jennifer Lee and Allison Moore (Night Sky, Manhunt). Peter Del Vecho (Frozen) and Juan Pablo Reyes (Encanto) produce with Lee (Frozen) as executive producer.
  • “This Wish,” featured in the teaser, is just one of the new songs written for the film by Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice. Dave Metzger composed the film’s score.
  • Synopsis: In Wish, Asha, a sharp-witted idealist, makes a wish so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force—a little ball of boundless energy called Star. Together, Asha and Star confront a most formidable foe—the ruler of Rosas, King Magnifico—to save her community and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things can happen.
  • Voice casting is led by Ariana DeBose, Chris Pine, and Alan Tudyk.
  • Disney also shared the film’s poster, seen below.

Cartoon Brew’s View: This looks like a winner for Disney. A new Disney heroine, an actual villain, adorable talking animals, a 2d storybook aesthetic, and inspirational music… It fits a formula that has traditionally done gangbusters for Disney at the box office and we wouldn’t be surprised if this one is a mega-hit.
