‘SuperMutant Magic Academy,’ ‘Batman: Knightfall,’ Original Adult Comedies Headline WBA And DC Studios’ Annecy Lineups
Warner Bros. Animation (WBA) and DC Studios are heading back to Annecy this year with a huge slate that leans heavily into superhero fare while also spotlighting a growing lineup of creator-driven originals for Adult Swim and even Netflix.
The two WBD companies jointly announced today that they will present multiple world premieres, behind-the-scenes sessions, and first-look panels during the festival, which runs June 21-27 in Annecy, France.
DC Takes Center Stage
The centerpiece of the studio’s Annecy presence is a major DC animation showcase hosted by DC Studios co-chairman and co-CEO Peter Safran alongside WBA president Sam Register.
The panel will include producers and creatives tied to several upcoming projects:
- Mister Miracle (announced during last year’s festival)
- My Adventures with Green Lantern
- Starfire!
- Creature Commandos
- Batman: Caped Crusader
- DC Super Powers
Among the announced participants are comic writer Tom King, whose acclaimed Mister Miracle comic is being adapted for animation, along with producers Rick Morales, Jake Wyatt, Josie Campbell, and Matt Beans.
The presentation marks one of the biggest public showcases yet for the new era of DC animation under Safran and James Gunn’s revamped DC Studios strategy. While most of the titles have already been announced, Annecy will offer the first substantial footage and creative details for some of the projects.

Anticipated Adaptation
One of the more notable new property projects Warner Bros. will bring to Annecy this year is SuperMutant Magic Academy (another title unveiled during last year’s festival), the Adult Swim adaptation of Jillian Tamaki’s Eisner Award-winning graphic novel. Produced by Cartoon Network Studios, the series follows students at a troubled boarding school populated by mutants, witches, and other supernatural oddballs. The story centers on friends Marsha and Wendy as they navigate teenage relationships alongside dragons, alchemy classes, dodgeball, and theater club.
A dedicated Annecy session will focus on how the graphic novel was adapted for animation, with Tamaki and producer Calvin Wong participating.

Batman: Knightfall World Premiere
Announced earlier this year, WBA will debut Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall at the festival as part of what the studio describes as a multi-part animated event.
The adaptation revisits one of Batman’s most famous comic storylines, in which Bane orchestrates a mass breakout at Arkham Asylum before systematically breaking Batman down physically and psychologically.
The original comic arc, published in the early 1990s, was created by a large team of writers and artists, including Doug Moench, Chuck Dixon, Alan Grant, Dennis O’Neil, Graham Nolan, Norm Breyfogle, and Jim Aparo.

Keeping Up With The Joneses
Coming to Adult Swim, the series – you guessed it, announced at Annecy last year – follows the Newberry family as they struggle to keep pace with their ultra-wealthy Dallas neighbors, including Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. The show was created by Hugh Davidson, Rachel Ramras, and Larry Dorf, who previously teamed on the Netflix series The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window. Davidson also wrote for Adult Swim’s Mike Tyson Mysteries and Robot Chicken, earning an Emmy Award for the latter.

Living the Dream
Headed to Netflix, Living the Dream comes from creator George Gendi (The Amazing World of Gumball, Apple & Onion). The Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe production follows two London friends stuck in low-paying social media jobs at an environmentally conscious company while trying to convince themselves that success is still within reach. Workplace disasters, awkward romance, corporate mandates, and parental disappointment all factor into the setup.

From the Boss
The Annecy lineup reflects both sides of Warner Bros. Discovery’s wider animation efforts, the franchise-heavy fan favorites and new properties from up-and-coming creators.
While DC seems to be the top priority at the moment, the studio is still investing in original creator-led comedy and adult animation projects aimed at streaming platforms, even those outside the Warner Bros. ecosystem.
Register emphasized that broader strategy in the company’s Annecy lineup announcement:
Annecy continues to be one of the most important global gatherings for the animation community, celebrating the artistry and innovation that move our industry forward. From expanding the next era of DC animation with our partners at DC Studios to showcasing original voices across our studios, our programming this year reflects the range, ambition, and creative momentum driving everything we do. We can’t wait to share the work our artists have been building with an audience that truly appreciates the craft.
The company will also host its annual Studio Focus session featuring upcoming projects from Warner Bros. Animation, Cartoon Network Studios, and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe across kids, young adult, and adult programming.
WBD’s Annecy slate offers one of the clearest looks yet at the company’s current animation priorities: more franchise expansion under new leadership, mature comedy for Adult Swim and partner distributors, streaming originals, and an increasingly global production strategy, especially in Europe.
