Netflix has unveiled a couple of extended teasers for Big Mouth, its new adult half-hour series about, as they put it, “the glorious nightmare of puberty.”

The series was created by actor/comedian Nick Kroll (Kroll Show), writer/producer Andrew Goldberg (Family Guy, American Dad!), and the writing/directing team of Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett (Little Manhattan, Madeline).

From the two teasers released, it’s clear that the show would have benefitted from higher production values. The perfunctory visual treatment and animation direction muzzles the over-the-top vocal performances and the disgusting “ick” potential of puberty. If you’re pushing this far into adult territory, you may as well go the whole way (that was the brilliance of Sausage Party, a rare raunchy animation project that didn’t restrain itself on the visual side).

Here’s how Kroll described the show during an interview last year:

It’s based on the real life experiences of me and my best friend, Andrew Goldberg, about a 13-year-old boy who matured very young and puberty ravaged him and I was a very late bloomer. And so, we were best friends but had a very different version of life… we seemed the same, but he was very much a man and I was very much a boy. And so the show is about all of that stuff. All of puberty.

Animation for the series was produced by Titmouse. Lead voice actors are Nick Kroll, John Mulaney, Jenny Slate, Jordan Peele, Fred Armisen, Maya Rudolph, Jessi Klein, and Jason Mantzoukas.

Big Mouth will premiere September 29 on Netflix.
