In this week’s biggest story, Netflix’s animated Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory is headed to theaters through Sony Pictures for six weeks before arriving on the streaming platform, the latest sign that the company may be warming to theatrical releases for its biggest animated features and a beacon of hope for fans who want to see those films on the big screen.
Speaking of theatrical, new details shared this week confirmed that Warner Bros. spent $70 million making Coyote vs. Acme before shelving it, and that Ketchup Entertainment paid $50 million to put it in theaters. Early reviews are overwhelmingly positive, so hopes are high that the film can turn a profit and prove that theatrical is where it’s at, and that the Looney Tunes are still a draw when used wisely. Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures have also acquired Makoto Shinkai’s still-untitled next feature for release outside Asia, while Graphic India is developing Shiva: The Adiyogi, an animated epic based on Sadhguru’s book series that is planned for a global run in cinemas.
In TV news, artists on Primal, Eyes of Wakanda, The Mighty Nein, and Star Wars: Visions were among this year’s juried Emmy winners, and the BBC is introducing Doctor Who to younger viewers with a new animated preschool series for CBeebies.
Beyond the screen, a second Dragon Ball theme park is reportedly being planned in France as work continues on the franchise’s massive Qiddiya attraction in Saudi Arabia. The Visual Effects Society has unveiled its Women Who Lead Summit program; Duolingo has acquired London animation and motion design studio Animade; and Pictoplasma is returning to New York City in September with two days of artist talks, screenings, portfolio reviews, and industry presentations.
