Reel Of The Week: John Turello

John Turello is a 2009 grad from the College of Fine Art at University of New South Wales, and started his animation career shortly thereafter as an animator on Happy Feet 2.

His new 2018 reel below features shots that he animated at Sony Pictures Imageworks (The Angry Birds Movie, The Emoji Movie, Storks, Smurfs: The Lost Village), Animal Logic (Peter Rabbit, The Lego Movie, Walking with Dinosaurs), and Iloura (The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water), among other studios.

Turello’s sharp comic timing and clarity of staging and posing are evident throughout the reel. It’s the simple actions in his reel that are most impressive, like Spongebob tasting grease or Bomb (from The Angry Birds) using his toes to gesture. These are ideas that could be handled by an animator in any number of ways. Turello manages to do more than just animate each shot, and finds ways to make each of the actions as entertaining to watch as possible.
