Genndy Tartakovsky Has Been Linked To An HBO ‘Game Of Thrones’ Animated Spinoff
Animation icon Genndy Tartakovsky is reportedly attached to one of HBO’s expanding Game of Thrones spinoffs, an animated series centered on legendary seafarer Corlys Velaryon, better known as the Sea Snake. The project is being developed under the working title Nine Voyages.
In a recent Deadline report, HBO chief Casey Bloys mentioned the animated Sea Snake series among several Game of Thrones extensions currently in development, with Tartakovsky reportedly involved. Details remain scarce, and nothing has been officially confirmed, but the rumor alone will surely stir excitement among animation professionals and fans, given Tartakovsky’s reputation for shaping some of the most memorable fantasy animation of the past few decades.
The move, if it happens, would bring the creator of Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, Unicorn Warriors Eternal, and Primal into Westeros at a time when studios are investing more heavily in adult animation and leaning on established IP to mitigate risk.
A trip to the Seven Kingdoms also makes sense for Tartakovsky personally. His recent The Black Knight animation test, along with his own comments, suggest he’s eager to continue exploring adult-oriented animation. And after his Sony Pictures Animation feature, Fixed, failed to make much of an impact with Netflix audiences, attaching himself to a major franchise could get him back in the good graces of fickle studios that are highly cautious when it comes to original adult animation projects.
The Sea Snake, introduced to television audiences in House of the Dragon, is famed within franchise lore for his expeditions across distant seas long before the events of the original series and George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels.
If the project moves forward, it would continue Tartakovsky’s long-running push toward more mature animated storytelling. An epic maritime saga set in the brutal world of Westeros seems well suited to his trademark mix of stylized action and mythic atmosphere, while further reinforcing animation’s growing role in prestige genre television.
