The Great, Good, Bad, And Ugly Of Netflix’s Latest Viewing Data Dump, And What It Says About The Streamer’s Original Animation Film Slate
Netflix’s biannual What We Watched report for the second half of 2025 is out now, and it paints a mixed picture of the state of the platform’s original animation feature output.
Overall, 27 of the top 100 films watched on Netflix during the second half of 2025 were animated, but only a few were Netflix Originals, and among those, not all were original Netflix IPs.
Below, we take a look at the great, the good, the bad, and the ugly from the six-month data dump.
The Great
KPop Demon Hunters took the world by storm, rewriting the streamer’s record book and becoming the most-watched title over a six-month period, with 482 million views. There’s not much more we can say about this film that we haven’t already said, so we won’t waste your time here.
Impressively, though, the film’s lyric videos also scored highly on Netflix’s series list (we’ll publish a separate article on that list later), ranking as the 27th most-watched program on the platform over the same six-month period, with 31.9 million views.
The Good
Although a hit with critics and audiences who saw it, In Your Dreams didn’t quite blow up the way Netflix might have hoped, given how aggressively the film was promoted ahead of its November 14 release. That said, the family-friendly feature still ranked as the 28th most-watched film of the period, despite being available for only a month and a half of the tracked window.
In Your Dreams pulled in 47.3 million views and 71.7 million viewing hours. The film has also been a critical success and a regular contender throughout this awards season, important metrics as Netflix continues to build its reputation as a platform capable of launching original, culturally relevant properties.
The Bad
In 2021, Netflix reportedly paid half a billion dollars for the rights to the full Roald Dahl library. It took four years, but the streamer finally released its first film under the deal, and things could have gone better. The Twits received middling-to-poor reviews and ranked 71st among the most-watched films on the platform over the last six months. Despite being available globally, it accumulated just 22 million views, performing on par with regionally restricted licensed titles like The Emoji Movie and Shrek Forever After. That’s certainly not the kind of return on investment Netflix would have hoped for when it first made the library deal.
The Ugly
Despite the attention it received within the industry and across the online animation community, Genndy Tartakovsky’s Fixed proved to be a disaster for Netflix. Released on August 13, the globally available film ranked 614th on the platform in the second half of last year, one spot below My Little Pony: A New Generation and only 9 spots ahead of Nimona, which was released 2 years ago.
Granted, Fixed is aimed at a much more specific audience than most of the animated titles Netflix distributes, but with only 5.2 million views over its first four months, the film is a commercial flop that could have painful consequences for future plans in the adult animated feature space.
The Acquisitions
As has long been the case, Netflix relies heavily on animated films and franchises from outside sources. Of the 27 animated films in Netflix’s top 100 most-watched titles over the last six months, all but five were licensed.
