Heritage Auctions scored a big hit last Thursday with an auction of stop motion puppets, props, and other artwork from Laika’s three features: Coraline, ParaNorman, and The Boxtrolls. It was the first time that artwork from the films had ever been made available to the public. The auction of more than 250 lots generated over $1 million in sales, with 100% of the lots selling.
While the drawings and paintings sold respectably, the puppets were the real stars of the auction, with twelve of the figures achieving over $20,000, and twenty others selling for over $10,000 apiece.
The top lot of the auction was an Evil Other Mother puppet that sold for $50,190, five times its pre-auction estimate of $10,000. The top artwork lot was a Boxtrolls movie poster concept from the ad agency Weiden+Kennedy, which sold for $4,063.
