Animation Coming To Netflix, Disney+, Max, Hulu, And More In May 2023

With May right around the corner, it’s time once again for our monthly animation streaming guide.

Netflix has the most animation additions coming next month, although most of the haul is licensed content or new seasons of existing series. One exception can be found in the new post-apocalyptic adult animated series Mulligan from co-creators Robert Carlock and Sam Means.

Disney+ will debut a pair of Star Wars animated series on May the 4th, Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures and the highly anticipated second season of Star Wars Visions. For the latter, Disney recruited nine of the world’s top indie animation studios to offer up their take on a galaxy far, far away.

HBO Max, until May 23 when it changes to just Max, has two exciting May debuts in Genndy Tartakovsky’s Unicorn Warrior Eternal and Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai.

Hulu is bringing a pair of international hits to the States in May with China’s Boonie Bears: Back to Earth and Spain’s Mummies. The former is the highest-grossing film in one of China’s most lucrative animated franchises and the latter has made more than $50 million globally, despite an incredibly muted North American theatrical run. Flor classic animation fans, Hulu is also getting the 1982 Rankin/Bass cult favorite film The Last Unicorn.

A few notes on the list: The list includes announcements for new seasons of existing shows, however, we do not list new episode releases of existing seasons, as some streamers roll out new episodes in monthly batches. Streamers also often announce new animation releases mid-month. Our guide only catalogs what the streamers announce at the beginning of the month, but, when possible, we try to update the schedule if there are mid-month announcements. The list only includes content premiering on the U.S. versions of these services.
