Swapped Swapped

Netflix’s animated feature Swapped has quickly become one of the streamer’s biggest animation successes ever, setting a string of viewership records in just over a month since its debut.

Directed by Nathan Greno, the co-director of Disney’s Tangled, Swapped is a fantasy-comedy adventure from Skydance Animation that follows Ollie (Michael B. Jordan), a chipmunk-like pookoo, and Ivy (Juno Temple), a bird-like javan, whose long-feuding species are forced to see the world through each other’s eyes after a magical body swap. Released on Netflix on May 1, the film combines broad family comedy with themes of empathy and understanding, and its breakout performance has quickly established it as one of the streamer’s most successful animated originals.

We’ve stepped back a bit from covering individual platform viewing numbers for single titles, but the film’s remarkable reception deserves special recognition. It’s a particularly significant accomplishment for Skydance, whose previous releases failed to generate comparable audience traction. It also marks the biggest commercial success to date for the studio’s animation division under chief creative officer John Lasseter.

According to Netflix’s weekly Top 10 rankings, Swapped surpassed 100 million global views in its fifth week of release, reaching the milestone faster than any animated film in the platform’s history. Yup, faster than KPop Demon Hunters did it last year.

The film added another 10.5 million views during the week of June 2, enough to push it past the nine-digit mark while remaining among Netflix’s most-watched titles worldwide.

Swapped‘s performance has been remarkable from the start. During its opening weekend, Swapped generated 15.5 million views, the biggest three-day debut for a Netflix animated feature since Leo in 2023.

Momentum only accelerated from there. In its first full week, the film drew 38.7 million views, the highest single-week total ever recorded for a Netflix animated movie.

By its second week, Swapped had accumulated 80.6 million views and claimed the highest viewership ever achieved by a Netflix animated film during its first two weeks of release. The movie then continued to dominate the service’s English-language film rankings, adding 16.1 million views during the week of May 26 before crossing the 100-million-view threshold days later.
