VFX producer Digital Domain is opening a new studio in Montreal, Canada. It is the company’s ninth location, joining existing studios in Los Angeles, Vancouver, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Taipei, and Hyderabad.

Located in the Plateau Mont-Royal neighborhood, the new Montreal studio will officially open on March 1, 2019. The space will start at 10,000 square feet, with expansion plans already in place.

The new location will focus on feature film and episodic visual effects. The studio’s recent feature projects include Avengers: Infinity War (pictured), Ant-Man and the Wasp, Ready Player One, A Wrinkle in Time, Thor: Ragnarok, and Fate of the Furious.

“Montréal is fueled by creativity and innovation, and was an obvious choice for the next studio location,” said Digital Domain CEO and executive director Daniel Seah. “Given the strong animation and visual effects talent pool in Montréal, we are stacking the deck to make this studio location an attractive offering to partners, molding the future of Digital Domain.”

Added Montreal mayor Valérie Plante, “We are thrilled to welcome Digital Domain in Montréal’s thriving ecosystem. This reaffirms our city’s enviable position as a world leader in the vfx and creative industry. Montréal’s omnipresent culture of creativity and innovation is fertile ground for ambitious studios looking to expand.”

Digital Domain joins a rapidly expanding group of animation and vfx shops that have opened studios in Montreal over the last year. Other new arrivals include ReelFX, Technicolor’s The Mill, Pixomondo, and Scanline VFX.

According to the non-profit organization Montréal International, nearly 14% of the investments that they facilitated in the city last year were related to the animation and vfx sector.
