20th Century Fox and New Regency have released a trailer for the fourth film in the Alvin and the Chipmunks CGI theatrical franchise:

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip, directed by Walt Becker, is slated to arrive in U.S. theaters on December 23, 2015. The film promises to be a piercing and insightful portrait of the breakdown of non-traditional family structures in 21st century America:

Through a series of misunderstandings, Alvin, Simon and Theodore come to believe that Dave is going to propose to his new girlfriend in New York City…and dump them. They have three days to get to him and stop the proposal, saving themselves not only from losing Dave but possibly from gaining a terrible stepbrother.

The three previous singing-rodent comedies—Alvin and the Chipmunks (2007), Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (2009), and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked (2011)—have collectively generated over $1.1 billion theatrically, and loads more on home video. In other words, they’ll continue pumping these out until the end of time…or until they stop making money — whichever comes first.
