Independent animator David O’Reilly (The External World) is hosting two animation programs next Saturday (7/2) at the Cinefamily theater in Los Angeles. Both are extremely intriguing and well worthwhile for our more adventurous readers.

1) Found Animation @2pm

From the deepest, most corrupt corners of David O’Reilly’s hard drive comes a collection of lost animated wonders, forgotten by time and YouTube, destined to break hearts, minds and sense of common decency. David says: “There will be work I found from now-defunct private torrent sites, old video tapes, friends & places I cant remember, gorgeous 3-D tentacle porn, footage of bizarre video games, and work by surrealist animation genius Charley Bowers (who was forgotten in his own lifetime and died in poverty). If you love Pixar, you will hate this!”

In other words, he’ll be running stuff like this:

2) The Agency @11:59pm (aka Midnight Show)

The world premiere of The Agency, which O’Reilly co-wrote with Vernon Chatman (creator of Wonder Showzen). He’s claiming it’s the world record for fastest created feature length animation – from conception to completion in one week.

It’s official: one of the most twisted new animated works we’ve seen in a very long time is also a new record holder. The film very, very loosely follows several office-bound characters as they plot their upwardly-climbing corporate destinies, continuously insult each other with non-stop vicious flair, and morph their reality with that of a duo of cute panda bear-looking creatures for whom the office dimension is just a dream…? This baffling slice of cough syrup-like comedy dementia was created entirely with “Xtranormal”, an online service that lets users make their own CGI mini-movies through a limited library of characters, sets and music, and with awkward text-to-speech synthesis — serving to produce a sublimely blobby experience that’ll sautée your cerebellum with love!

NEW RULES: Academy tweaks qualification for number of Animated Feature nominees

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today several changes to the Oscar nomination process, with modifications to certain category rules.

For Best Animated Feature, the rules were tweaked as follows (my analysis in parentheses):

1. The need for the Board to vote to “activate” the category each year was eliminated, though a minimum number of eligible releases – eight – is still required for a competitive category (in other words, if I understand this correctly, the Animated Feature category is now permanent with no need for the Board to vote on its existence year after year.)
2. If there are eight-to-twelve features that year “two or three of them may be nominated” (previously, a minimum of 3 films would be nominated. This new rule allows the possibility of only 2 films to run against each other – in theory a third, “lesser film”, could be dropped).
3. If 13 to 15 films qualify, a maximum of four films can be nominated (this is a good new tweak, allowing for more than three films to be nominated if less than 16 animated features are released).
4. If 16 animated features are released and qualify, a maximum of five may be nominated (the tweak here allows the committee to nominate less than five films, if they so decide).

The optimist in me feels that these new tweaks won’t change the potential nominees much. To sum up: If 8-12 films qualify, three will be nominated. If 13-15 films qualify, four will be nominated. And if over 16 films qualify, five will be nominated. Read more about the new rule changes in the Academy press release here.

“Tom & Jerry Live” Again

Two weeks ago I warned you informed you about the existence of Tom & Jerry Live!, Argentina’s new stage musical based on the MGM cartoon superstars. In case you didn’t believe me – here’s a 90 second clip… (I apologize for this in advance)

TODAY IN SF: Meet “Bambi” Art Director Tyrus Wong!

The legendary Tyrus Wong, who art directed Bambi among countless other accomplishments and who is one hundred years young, was hanging out at Pixar yesterday. Here are some impressions of his visit as tweeted by Pixar artists:

Today, the rumor is that he’ll make an appearance at the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco, though they haven’t officially announced it. The museum is hosting a lecture at 3pm called “The Art of Tyrus Wong” with historian Charles Solomon, and production designers Ralph Eggleston (WALL·E, Finding Nemo) and Paul Felix (Lilo & Stitch, The Emperor’s New Groove). I imagine that’s the event Ty will appear at, but even if he doesn’t, it still sounds like a terrific presentation. I’d recommend purchasing an on-line ticket before showing up because it’s probably going to be a sell out.

TUESDAY in LA: “Allegro Non Troppo”

For those of us stuck in L.A. and not attending Annecy this year, take heart. I’ll be hosting a rare 35mm screening of the 1976 Bruno Bozzetto feature-length masterpiece, Allegro Non Troppo, at my Animation Tuesday screening on Tuesday night (June 7th).

The film, a feature length parody of Disney’s Fantasia, is a masterpiece unto itself – and if you haven’t seen it you are required to attend. Bozzetto visualizes Ravel’s “Bolero” as an Evolutionary Fantasy, one that supposes life began as germs from a discarded Coke bottle; Vivaldi’s “Concerto in C” is the backdrop of an insect revenge senario; and, Sibelius’ “Valse Triste” is used for a poignant tale of an abandoned house cat. Bozetto also skewers Dvorak and Debussy using full blown character animation, and the film is framed with zany live-action bridging sequences featuring the “Woody Allen” of Italy, Maurizio Nichetti. And just to get things started, we’ll begin the show with several vintage Hollywood cartoon shorts (also in 35mm) that use classical music as their basis.

“Jazz In Animation” at Sacramento’s Crocker Art Museum

How are you spending your holiday weekend? Me, I’ll be screening a program of Jazz Cartoons at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento California on Monday, May 30th. The program will run twice, first at 12 noon and again at 2pm. Jazz musician and author Joe Gilman will join me on stage to briefly discuss the cultural aspects of several classic cartoons and clips.
