The cloud of uncertainty created by Covid has a silver lining: events like Lightbox Expo, recast as virtual affairs, are accessible to a vast swathe of the population. Passes for this year’s convention, which celebrates the art of animation, video games, and more, start at only $2.

Lightbox Expo’s third edition will be held on September 7–12. Ahead of the event, we’re spotlighting the Instagram profiles of five outstanding artists who will be speaking at the event. To explore the lineup in full, head to the official website.

Robert Kondo is a veteran of Pixar’s art department and co-founder of Tonko House. At Lightbox Expo, he will speak about his studio’s creative process and presenting a work-in-progress of upcoming series Oni.


Esther Wu is a concept and visual development artist whose video game credits include Destiny 2: Forsaken and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. They will give a lecture and demo on the art of mech design.


Dom Qwek is a sculptor and digital artist who has worked for game companies like Blizzard Entertainment and Guerrilla Games. He will explain how he created his recent digital work Monolith.


Breana Williams is a designer and story artist, and co-founder of advocacy group Black N Animated. Williams and other BNA leaders will discuss animation careers from the perspective of Black artists.


Deanna Marsigliese is a Pixar character designer whose credits include Toy Story 4 and Soul. She will take part in a talk about the collaboration between the art and animation departments on Luca, on which she served as character art director.
